This Friday, May 22nd, we held the launch party for the Festival Z 2026 at Salvador Espriu Square in Girona. The square turned pink in a gathering full of complicity, music, and a great atmosphere, kicking off the new edition of the festival.
Throughout the evening, we discovered this year’s lineup, which will fill various venues in Girona and Salt from July 8th to the 11th with young, vibrant, and diverse proposals. The program includes disciplines such as circus, dance, performance art, and street theater, among others.
Once again, the evening featured the participation of the Espai LGTB, which joined the celebration and turned the square into an open, festive, and shared space. All evening long, DJ Tarada set the pace of the party with a set that allowed us to enjoy being together once again.

This week we presented the 20 scenic proposals created by companies and artists under thirty, including finished shows, shows in the creation phase, and embryonic projects, which will take place from Wednesday, July 8th to Saturday, July 11th at various venues in Girona and Salt.
Tomorrow, Friday, May 22nd, we will celebrate the launch of the program with a festive evening hosted by DJ Tarada, with bar service and advance ticket sales at a 20% discount. We’ll be at Plaça Salvador Espriu (Girona) starting at 7:00 PM, don’t miss it!!!
The 2026 edition of Festival Z takes the motto “A poc a poc i bon teatre” (Slowly and good theatre) as an invitation to pause our frantic lives and make room for careful creation in good company. That’s why we invite you to get comfortable, pour your favourite drink, and take a few minutes to learn a bit more about what you’ll find at Festival Z. Ready? Keep reading!
SLOWLY, BUT IN MOTION
The festival will kick off on Wednesday, July 8th at 6:30 PM, at Plaça de l’U d’octubre in Girona, with Âcid, by the collective Sound de Secà. Amidst percussion, funky, and hip-hop rhythms, extravagant and colourful characters will take us on a route through the city streets, igniting energy and the desire to move wherever they go. Their journey will end at Plaça dels Jurats, where, at 8:00 PM, Bewis de la Rosa will offer us a good dose of <Rap Rural>, a vibrant proposal combining live music with elements of dance, physical theatre, and audiovisuals to talk about home and rurality.
Other festival proposals also use movement and music to speak of what perhaps cannot be said with words alone. This is the case with AARGH!, by the collective Mispronounced, which through humour and dance-theatre explores the scream as a point of tension between conformity and radical freedom. Setting a different tone, but also placing the body at the centre, I felt a funeral in my brain, by Sira Aymerich i Besalú (Lanormal), combines a 2-meter tall pine trunk with a 60 cm diameter, a melodica, a wooden puppet, and a woman’s body to create a dialogue between life and death.
SLOWLY, AND IN GOOD COMPANY
The idea of networking and building community is one of the key pillars of Festival Z, and especially of this year’s edition. We live in a fast-paced world, yes, but one that also tends toward atomization and individualism. This world is perfectly portrayed, with a raw, personal, and post-humorous gaze, by the writer and stage creator Eduard Olesti, who is joined by a handful of good friends to bring us Shrek, Kebabs i la Caiguda de Iugoslàvia, a PowerPoint-performance about the end of language.
The communication crisis in a world of darkness is also addressed in Punt i Ratlla, a theatre, clown, and physical proposal still in the creation phase by Eric Remedios Vicente and Mercè Badia Pàmies. A show that speaks to us about the need for the other, as does Ramat, by Oasi Teatre, a proposal blending physical theatre, contemporary circus, and visual poetry about a shepherd who has lost his herd, challenging us on the need to belong to a collective.
SLOWLY, AND REMEMBERING WHERE WE COME FROM
Memory is one of the themes that will also carry weight within this year’s Festival Z. Oniria Teatro will bring us Vaga y Maleanta, a cabaret based on real stories and testimonies from older people in the LGTBIQ+ community, with drag artist Kiki Morgan as the master of ceremonies. A documentary variety show with original music, packed with improvisation and dark humour.
Likewise, Dolça Alcanyís and Laia Picas appeal to citizens’ memories with De l’embolic al rastre, an itinerant community mediation proposal, in the creation phase, that tours the public space as a collective body, developed with local residents. From a more festive and musical perspective, Abans que em mori (working title), by Judit M. Gené turns the stage into a town festival street party, using songs from the popular imagination and real testimonies from the elderly, to talk while dancing about memory, old age, and bonds. The proposal will be accompanied by a popular paella that will close the festival in the best possible way!
SLOWLY, BUT LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
As is customary at the festival, Thursday morning will feature the event Futurs escènics imminents!, which each year presents several projects in the pre-production phase—embryonic ideas that, with the support of attending professionals and audience feedback, will one day become finished shows (or whatever!). The proposals to be presented this year are La Caiguda i l’Ascens d’Erika Larroy, by Èric Pons; Lyrics for a friend, by Paula Ramis and Magalí Camps; El viatge, by Colette Casas; f00l, by the collective antramaliada; DESENCANTS (working title), by Abril Pérez Mitchell; Cap Casa, by Ratafria Circ; Els meus arbres, by La Mà Esquerra; Topografia d’arrelament, by Georgina Hurtado (La Ventura); Els llocs, by ACUR (Jana Sandiumenge and Helena Gascón), and Cos de fusta (working title), by Elaine Grayling.
PRO ACTIVITIES
In addition to the entire program, once again this year, the festival will offer various PRO activities open to accredited companies, programmers, and other performing arts professionals. Activities include the Fem Matx! breakfasts and the La Gran Boda Z lunches, meeting spaces; energized danceokés before some shows, or training sessions. Most of these activities are closed to the general public, but some are included with the purchase of certain shows.

A playful, performative, and dynamic presentation of ten performing arts projects currently in the pre-production phase, designed especially as a meeting space for companies and industry professionals. The diverse and hybrid proposals range from text, circus, and physical theatre to dance and object theatre. They are shared with the aim of fostering complicity, alliances, and opportunities to bridge the gap between the initial idea and final production.
Actress Neus Miranda and actor Cesc Graset will host this day full of discoveries, primarily conceived for professionals, but also open to any curious individuals who wish to get closer to the processes of contemporary stage creation.
The day will begin with Danceoké Z, a welcome in the form of a collective warm-up where, through shared songs and choreography, we will activate our bodies and energy to face the morning. Following the project presentations, the “Fem Matx!” appetizers will offer an informal space to continue getting to know the companies and share a conversation while standing and enjoying a snack.

Abans que em mori is a musical and theatrical performance that turns the stage into a traditional village festival (revetlla) and invites the audience to immerse themselves in the universe of a popular orchestra.
The piece combines songs, humour, storytelling, and memory to traverse a world of pasodobles, boleros, tangos, cuplets, and village dances that are part of the collective imagination of several generations, bringing them into the present and turning the performance into a living, intimate experience shared with the audience.
Abans que em mori incorporates material from real testimonies of elderly people, who explain how they loved, danced, and lived through music. As it unfolds, the piece delves into themes such as family bonds, ageing, memories, and everything that remains stored within the songs.

Punt i Ratlla combines theatre, clowning, and gestural theatre. It presents two travel companions who find themselves caught up in a game of misunderstandings, in a world where everything seems like smoke and darkness.
With their reality disrupted by the invisible wall that separates them from one another, they will try to find a way to reconnect and continue their journey.
Through the body, rhythm, and humor, the show explores the difficulties of communication and the need for the “other” as the only possible way to keep moving forward.

Ramat presents an austere, changing, and living landscape, where a lonely character has lost what is most precious to them: their flock. In their search for companionship and shelter, this performance unfolds, drawing on physical theatre, contemporary circus, and visual poetry to explore individual loneliness and the need to belong to a collective.
This shepherd cannot make the journey alone. The audience members become an active part of their new flock, a key piece for the survival of the show and the one who inhabits it. In this fragile and necessary bond between performer and audience, Ramat becomes a shared, organic, and unrepeatable experience.
Through natural materials, live music, the language of the body, and complicity with the spectators, the piece reminds us that perhaps being part of the flock is not as bad as it sounds.

De l’embolic al rastre is an itinerant community mediation performance piece that takes place in public spaces.
A body of bodies follows the trail of memory. Rolling along. In the corners.
The street as a nest of memory, and a group of people crossing it, a tangle of intertwined legs and arms, with a head poking out here and there, advancing as a collective body. It leaves a mark: a trail of gazes.
The piece stems from a prior working process with local people, which serves as the starting point for this moving scenic device. The audience follows this journey, observing the movement of a collective body as it traverses the street and transforms the perception of the environment.
Through this languid movement, the piece invites us to listen closely and, beyond the daily murmur, perceive delicate polyphonies from other times.

I felt a Funeral, in my Brain combines dance, puppetry, wood, and the spoken word to explore identity, matter, and the spaces between the living and the inert.
At the center of the stage, a large pine trunk becomes a house, a refuge, a burden, and a coffin. This object, heavy with time and memory, engages in a dialogue with the performer’s body, which moves it, supports it, and confronts it. It is accompanied by a wooden puppet that functions as an alter ego, a conscience, or an inner voice.
The show offers an intimate journey that reflects on life, death, and the construction of the self, while questioning imposed roles. It creates a space where body, matter, and time converge to generate open-ended questions.

Using words and PowerPoint, slide by slide, we will talk about men, pop culture, psychoanalytic delusions, the history of a vanished country, mass tourism in grim settings, Shrek memes, the metaphysics of the history of gastronomy, erotic desire, princesses, Tomàs Molina, the pain of others, cemeteries, speed, genocide, poetry, castles, and fear.

<Rap Rural> is the opening concert of Festival Z 2026: a performance piece by Bewis de la Rosa, one of the most prominent independent artists of the moment and a unique voice tied to rural territories. Her self-contained universe intertwines live music, dance, and performance with references to Castilian tradition and rural imagery.
With sound design by producer G. Rams, the project traverses rap, hip-hop, Latin rhythms, and folklore, building a scenic language with a powerful performative edge. It brings forward critical thinking, lineage, the importance of land access, self-sufficiency, spirituality, craftsmanship, historical wounds, and mental health-nourishing humanity with a cucharón (ladle) and a botijo (earthen water pitcher), while championing love as the ultimate engine for transformation.

The Xarxa Z project has been selected as one of the finalists for the 2026 Lluís Carulla Award and is entering the program’s incubation phase, after participating in the “Academy” alongside nineteen other cultural initiatives from across the country.
Promoted by the Carulla Foundation, the Lluís Carulla Award is a cultural entrepreneurship program that aims to identify and nurture projects with the capacity to transform society through culture. In this first phase, twenty proposals were selected to join the Academy, a space for intensive training and exchange between projects.
Within this framework, Xarxa Z participated in five face-to-face sessions held between February 19 and March 19 in Barcelona. These sessions focused on cultural impact, entrepreneurial skills, project evaluation, and communication. The process culminated in a day of presentations before the selection committee.
Following this journey, the project has been chosen as one of the ten finalists moving on to the incubation phase, where they will receive personalized support to strengthen their proposal and work on its viability.
Xarxa Z is conceived as a scale-up of Festival Z, aiming to connect creation, support, and exhibition processes for young companies within a continuous circuit. Under the motto “connecting young creation, territory, and community”, the project proposes open and accessible professional paths that link emerging artists with the local context and the audience.
Moving into the incubation phase consolidates Xarxa Z’s path within a program that will culminate in the selection of two winning projects and subsequent support for their development.
This milestone reinforces Festival Z’s commitment to creating stable structures for young creation and expanding its impact beyond the festival format, connecting agents, territories, and communities through the performing arts.
