“The exhibition of young artists’ work took place in various venues in Girona and Salt from July 10 to 13.”
Girona, July 15, 2025.-Festival Z came to a close on Sunday after four days dedicated to the performing arts and young creators. The organizers have given a very positive assessment of the fifteen artistic proposals and the connections created between the professional sector and the companies featured in the program. Of the 7 paid events this year, 3 sold out, and the festival achieved an average attendance rate of 87%.
With the aim of serving as a springboard for companies under 30 years of age and providing a meeting place for professionals seeking to connect with the performing arts, Festival Z offered a diverse and unique four-day edition dedicated to the living arts. The program included a total of fifteen performances ranging from clowning, text-based theater, and street theater to dance, music, and installations, with pieces for all audiences. In the words of the organizers: “We are very happy to have been able to celebrate five years of the festival. From this edition, we would like to highlight the quality, diversity, and risk-taking of the performances programmed, as well as the collaborations and opportunities that have arisen between the companies and professionals in the sector within the framework of the festival.”
Attendance has once again been remarkable this year, with an average occupancy rate of 87%, higher than in previous editions, such as 2024, with 79%. As for the seven paid events, three have sold out: the two opening events, which are the show Glòria a la patrona princesa de Girona (Glory to the Patron Saint Princess of Girona) at the Municipal Theater of Girona and the concert by the group Svetlana at the La Mercè Cultural Center; and the premiere of the play Kenòpsia by the Las Calatrava theater company at Parc Central in Girona on Sunday, July 13.
Festival Z has had to cancel the performances scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, July 12, due to the alert issued by Civil Protection for heavy rain. The performances in question are Tribut a les rates by Las Espectadoras, Field Recordings from Oblivion by the Uku’Pacha company, and I Felt a Funeral, in my Brain by the Lanormal company and Sira Aymerich i Besalú.
“The fifth edition had the highest number of industry professionals in the history of the festival.”
A bridge to the professional sector
In addition to the full program, once again this year, Festival Z offered several professional activities aimed at companies, programmers, and other performing arts professionals with the aim of fostering connections and collaboration among them. This fifth edition of the festival welcomed around 120 professionals from the sector from across Catalonia and other parts of Spain, who participated in initiatives such as Danzaoke Z and Let’s Match – Appetizer, among others. This is the highest number in the festival’s history, followed by 2023, which welcomed more than 90 professionals.
Festival Z was created in 2021 by the Joan Bosch Private Foundation, owner of the University School of Arts ERAM – UdG, in line with the foundation’s objectives and track record, which focus on research, qualification, and professionalization in the fields of visual and performing arts. During these four editions, the Festival has welcomed and promoted several emerging companies and artists who, as a result of their participation in the festival, have been able to strengthen their professional structures, generate various alliances, find other financial and logistical support, and plan a tour of the region. Some of the most notable examples are Col·lectiu Desasosiego with the show Un segundo bajo la arena; Cia. Atzucac with Noves espiritualitats per a persones atees; Maria Jover and Gerard Franch with Berenguera; Malsai Produccions with Calla, Judit, calla, and Elena Romero with Costura, among many others.

Five companies that have passed through the Festival Z and are doing very well
18.06.25
As you probably already know, Festival Z does not only want to be a space for the exhibition of shows by companies and artists under thirty years old, but also a springboard that allows projects that pass through our house to take a leap and have a long life. Today we present five companies and artists who have gone through some of the editions of Festival Z and who are doing great!
MARIONA JAUME AND MAYA TRIAY
These two Mallorcan dancers are already part of the Festival Z family. In 2023, they presented a project in the creation phase. This first show, they explain, was «a great opportunity to meet other artists and cultural agents», which helped them to move the proposal forward to the point of being able to present the finished show, a year later, at the festival, under the title S’albufera. «It was very exciting to return to the festival with the finished work, after having presented the germ the previous year», they say.
What they like most about Festival Z? The atmosphere, the good vibes and the activities, which make «people get to know each other in a genuine and fun way». A spirit that, they say, they try to take with them when they go to other venues or festivals.
As a result of its passage through the Z, S’albufera has been programmed in various festivals and fairs, and soon we will be able to see it in FiraTàrrega, Dans’illot, Menorca en Dansa, FIET or the Festival Perifèria Cultural, among others. In addition, Mariona and Maya have also premiered El verd també era, and they are already embarking on a new creation, NUS, which will be premiered in 2026. We can’t wait to see it!
CIA. JORDI FONT
Lately, Jordi Font and Nina Solà Carbonell, with their different hats (either Cia. Jordi Font or the company Mambo Project), do not stop. A couple of years ago they created a new space for creation and artistic residencies in Ribes de Freser, La Cremallera, and this year they have still had time to be part of the program of the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, with the show Iaia, by Mambo Project.
Although, at Festival Z, they came in 2023, with a performance of Ells i jo, o aquella sensació que els arbres et miren. They explain that doing so was «a great showcase» that allowed them to make the play known and tour several venues in Catalonia and Spain: they have been in Inca, Banyoles, Viladecans, Utebo, Santa Perpètua, Madrid, the FETEN Festival… It’s easy to say!
In addition, Jordi and Nina visit the festival whenever they can as an audience, even if they are not part of the programme. «We met wonderful people with whom we have been meeting again and with whom we share views and synergies», some of them, they say, have already passed through their space, La Cremallera, to do residencies!
In September they will premiere Jovent, with Mambo Project, «a loudspeaker for testimonies of young people between the ages of fifteen and eighteen who reflect on the future».
COL·LECTIU DESASOSIEGO
Few companies have been so many times in Festival Z as Col·lectiu Desasosiego, formed by Camille Latron, Àlex Solsona, Carla Coll and Pau Caselles. And few, like them, can say that they were part of the 0 edition of the Festival, when we were still in beta phase, in 2020. Then, they presented a first sample of Un segundo bajo la arena, the show that they would bring back to the festival a year later, in an almost finished format, and that later would make them win the Moritz Award of FiraTàrrega, the Novaveu Critics Award, the Audience Award of Alcarràs, and thousands of applauses in more than 100 performances all over the state. What is called a success with audiences!
In 2023 they returned to Festival Z to present a new project, then in pre-production, Breu visita a la gola del llop, which they premiered this year at the El Maldà theater in Barcelona, and which will now begin touring. In addition, they are also touring a street installation, Com qui sent ploure.
Desasosiego try to come to the festival every year, whether they are programmed or not, as they always find attractive proposals and it helps them to «make connections with facilities and other companies», which they consider essential. «The company would not be what it is without their participation in Festival Z», they say, and surely Festival Z would not be the same without them!
LA DONA CALBA
A young, self-described troupe that makes adult puppetry about a grandmother who remembers her past through objects? Although La Dona Calba admit that it is difficult, it is possible! They have proved it with the show Caterina, which could be seen last year at Festival Z.
Despite the difficulties of distributing a show of these characteristics, the Calbes collected a few gigs from their performance in Girona. And they left their mark: «from time to time, there is still someone who tells us: ”I saw you at the Z and you made me fall in love with you”», they say. In addition, through the festival, they traveled to Pamplona, to the Latxa Meetings, as representatives of the Festival. Better represented, impossible!
Beyond the gigs, the festival helped them to meet companies and artists in the same situation as them, as well as programmers and professionals from whom they have received support. Some of them, they recognize, have turned out to be «referents», and they invite them to the shows and performances they do.
While they work to consolidate the structure of the company (something very important, and little is said about it), they continue to move Caterina, which will tour Argentina for a month, and they are preparing their second piece, Entresòl 1a, about the housing problem. Follow them closely!
ELAINE GRAYLING
Anyone who knows Elaine knows that the energy of closeness and familiarity of her shows extends to all aspects of her life and persona. That’s why she feels «at home» in the Festival Z networking environment. She retains a human bond with each of the people she has met, and believes that it is precisely «this tissue of complicity and mutual support» that is the most valuable thing about the festival.
In 2023 we had her at the festival with Man mano, il tempo scorre, a solo that invites us to reflect on family memory by cooking (and eating) gnocchi according to the traditional Neapolitan recipe of Elaine’s family. After its passage through the festival, the show has filled the bellies and hearts of audiences at Fira Mediterrània, El Maldà, the Límbic Festival, the Escena Poblenou Festival or the Casa Encendida in Madrid, and has received a nomination for the Revelation Award at the Premis de la Crítica 2024.
Looking forward to new projects, Elaine is in no hurry, and wants to continue investigating following the premise of the title of her show, Man mano, which literally means «little by little».
In addition to her personal project, Elaine is part of L’Última Merda Col·lectiu, which agitates and activates cultural spaces of all kinds, such as Festival Z, where they have participated in three editions, in the last of which they were in charge of the opening show. Being part of L’Ultima Merda has made her return on many occasions to the festival, and this makes her feel that she is still part of this ever-growing family. «The link with the Z is still alive, even if it’s from another place», she says, and we love it!

This Friday, May 23rd, we celebrated the presentation party of the Z 2025 Festival at the Salvador Espriu Square in Girona, and we did it as we like the most: in the street, among friends, with music, good atmosphere and a great desire to share what we have been preparing!
During the party, we discovered all the companies that will be part of this year’s edition of the festival, which will be held from 10 to 13 July in various venues in Girona and Salt. We did it with the help of two very special presenters: the two little rats that will accompany us this year.
The evening also featured a performance by the New Generation Choir and a final session by DJ Tarada, who turned the square into a real dance floor.
Thanks to all of you who came, sang, danced, toasted and celebrated the beginning of a new edition of Festival Z.
And if you couldn’t be there, do not suffer: we leave you a compilation of the best images of the party.
The complete programme is now available, with all the shows, schedules and spaces. Check it out, make your itinerary and reserve your dates: from July 10 to 13.
We are waiting for you!

Next Friday, May 23rd at 7pm, Festival Z will make public the full program of its fifth edition, which will take place from July 10th to 13th in Girona and Salt. To celebrate it, it has organized a party open to everyone in the Salvador Espriu square in Girona (behind the Lleó Market), with the collaboration of the city’s LGTBI Space.
The party will feature performances by the participating companies, bar service, surprises and a musical session by DJ Tarada, which will put rhythm to an evening designed to share, celebrate and warm up engines for the most loving edition of the festival.
As a novelty, during the event will open a point of sale of advance tickets with a 20% discount, available only that day and exclusively in person.
With this event, Festival Z officially kicks off the 2025 edition, whose motto is «For the love of art».

Festival Z call for applications receives 119 proposals, the year with the highest number of projects submitted
07.04.25
The open call to submit projects to be part of Festival Z has received a total of 119 proposals for the 2025 edition. This is a figure higher than that of all previous editions, a fact that has made this year’s edition the most disputed when it comes to choosing the proposals that will be part of the festival’s program. The call was open from October 30 to December 21, 2024.
Of the 119 proposals submitted, which include all kinds of scenic languages (theater, dance, circus, performance, etc.), 69 applied to Modality 1 (exhibition, designed for finished shows); 30, to Modality 2 (which offers creative residency and public exhibition of the process, for projects in an advanced stage of creation), and 20, to Modality 3 (which serves as a first showcase for embryonic ideas or projects in pre-production phase). This year, as a novelty, and largely as a result of the collaborations established by the festival in recent editions with other projects in the territory, it is worth mentioning the participation of companies from the rest of Spain (16), as well as international companies (5).
During the months of January and February of this year, an independent commission formed by young cultural managers, as well as artists under 30 years of age, has carried out the selection of the proposals that will be part of the 2025 edition in its different modalities. This year, the jury included Rut Girona (performing arts producer), Agnès Jabbour (actress, creator and director of Orientación Colectiva Loli), Alba Latorre (sociologist and actress graduated in gestural theater, promoter of the Festival L’Inevitable), Aleix Lidon Baulida (multidisciplinary circus artist and co-founder of the company Non Sin Tri), Sara Manubens (choreographer and transvestite, also linked to educational and mediation projects), Berta Sayeras (cultural worker, creator, teacher and producer, linked to Escenaris Especials).
The commission stresses that the choice of projects has been «very difficult», in the words of Sayeras, due to the high quality of the proposals. It is in relation to this duality that Girona speaks of the selection process as «a risky moment, but also a very nice one». Lidon underlines the good harmony in which the jury has worked: «when the group is in harmony, it is always easier to reach a consensus», she says. Likewise, she assures that «the values of the festival have been present at all times and we have been very careful to defend them». Latorre emphasizes that the six have constituted a «diverse» jury, where «it has been possible to approach the selection from the experience of each person», while Sayeras believes that this diversity «will be reflected» in the programming of this edition, which will be announced next May.
Z Zone, the Festival Z crowdfunding initiative, is born
Z Zone, the Festival Z crowdfunding initiative, is born
07.04.25
This July, Festival Z will celebrate its fifth edition. In five years, the festival has been born, has grown and has taken the first steps to become a reference space for young creation in Catalonia. Still with plenty of room to grow, but already with a certain stability, the festival presents this year Z Zone, a crowdfunding initiative through which to exchange benefits with the most assiduous fans.
The Z Zone is an opportunity to link directly with the Festival Z. Those who are part of it will have free tickets, discounts, unique activities and a closer relationship with the Z community (artists, team, venues, etc.). This space is born from proximity and trust, with the desire to make it grow with audiences and professionals who want to be part of it.
Each member of Z Zone will be an essential and active part of Festival Z, trusting in the project, offering their support and making it possible for it to be carried out. It is a meeting space open to everyone (individuals, entities, companies and other organizations), which will work to meet the social and cultural objectives of the festival, among which are to promote the professionalization of artists, to support young creation and to place Girona on the map as a city that promotes and encourages the presence of young people in the performing arts.
Being part of the Z Zone involves making an annual donation of between 100 and 500 euros, in exchange for which the user will receive a series of advantages, such as free tickets for the opening of the festival, unique discounts for the entire programme, exclusive activities for Z Zone members, promotions and updated information on the artists and the festival. In addition, Z Zone contributors will be able to deduct up to 80% of their contribution in their income tax return, so that for 100 euros invested, for example, the user would recover 80.
FESTIVAL Z, FIFTH EDITION
Festival Z, which will celebrate its fifth edition from 10 to 13 July, was born in 2021, from the Joan Bosch Private Foundation, owner of the University School of Arts ERAM – UdG, with the desire to be an engine of promotion and visibility of creators and stage creators under thirty years and also a space for reflection and transmission of transgenerational knowledge between professionals with more and less experience, in the municipalities of Girona and Salt. All in line with the objectives and trajectory of the foundation, focused on research, qualification and professionalization in the fields of visual and performing culture.

On March 24, at the Romea Theater in Barcelona, the 27th Performing Arts Critics Awards, organized by Recomana, were held to recognize the most outstanding proposals in theater, dance and circus of the year 2024. Actress Míriam Moukhles received the Revelation Award for her excellent work in three productions last year: Anna Karènina, Tots ocells, and Nodi: de gossos i malditos, the latter presented as a project in pre-production and as an open rehearsal in the 2022 and 2023 editions of Festival Z, respectively. The project, created by Moukhles herself together with Joan Sentís, Maria Donoso and Albert Boronat, also received the support of El Canal, Cotxeres Borrell, the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Terrassa Artes Escénicas, the Kaddish Theater of El Prat and Casa Orlandai.
In the emotional speech to receive the award, Míriam Moukhles thanked the Festival Z. You can retrieve the fragment of the gala here: https://youtu.be/7d-zpAeQhlc?t=1836
Also in the Revelation category, which Moukhles won, was nominated Elaine Grayling, performer and creator of the show Man Mano, il tempo scorre, also presented in residence at the 2023 Festival Z. In addition to the Revelation Award, the show Nodi: de gossos i malditos was also nominated for the Small Format Critics Award, which was won by the show Pura passió, by Lucia del Greco. The gala was hosted by Glòria Riberal, collaborator in the presentation of the program of the 2024 edition of Festival Z.

This year, we are doing the Festival Z «for the love of art»!
This year, we are doing the Festival Z «for the love of art»!
07.04.25
How many times have you heard that you were doing something for the love of art? This romantic and apparently beautiful image of doing something because you love it, with passion, hides a precarious reality, in which artists and creators work and fight to start their projects often with love as the only exchange.
Continuing with these ideas, this year’s edition of Festival Z, to be held from July 10 to 13 in Girona and Salt, takes as its motto «For the love of art», as a celebration and denunciation at the same time. On the one hand, we want to celebrate love as a creative force that, through the path of art, unites different people and realities, accompanies us, embraces us and makes us feel stronger. On the other hand, we want to use the theme ironically to denounce how this love of art has been used to perpetuate the precariousness of the cultural sector and especially of the youngest creators.
True to our essence, in the 2025 edition of Festival Z we claim love, yes, but also the professionalization of young artists. That is why, once again this year, the festival will feature a selection of shows created by young people (and aimed at all types of audiences), as well as connection spaces so that young artists can get in touch with professionals in the performing arts sector and generate links that help them to move their projects forward.

THE IMAGE: THE MOUSE
The mouse is a curious and playful animal. A creature that, like us, moved by the desire to discover, often ends up trapped in some trap. At the same time, it is his curiosity that makes him strong, as well as the ability to sneak through any gap, to manage to survive in the most adverse conditions. His image alerts us to the traps in which we can fall when we take the first steps in the artistic field, but it also leads us to claim the strength of the small, of enthusiasm, of the desire to play, and of love, not only as a trap, but as a driving force.
